The Steam Baths and its benefits

The Steam Bath, commonly called Turkish Bath, dates back to Roman times.
It is regularly taken in the Middle East and in Eastern Europe and, in recent years, it has become very popular also in Italy thanks to its relaxing, purifying and regenerating properties.

The treatment is carried out in a very humid environment (humidity level close to 100%), characterised by steam creating different temperatures: from 20°-25° at floor level to 40°-45° head height.

The steam helps dilate the pores of the skin, encouraging the expulsion of toxins and the skin cleansing.
Thanks to the diffusion of balm essences (pine, eucalyptus, menthol), your respiratory tracts will also benefit from it.

In the Turkish Bath, through the steam at 45°, you will obtain many beneficial effects thanks to two natural reactions:
a) the perspiration, due to the high humidity level and the heat;
b) the vasodilatation, due to the heat.

The liquid expulsion through the perspiration promotes the elimination of toxins, such as lactic acid, uric acid, unnecessary fat, amino acids, purifying the body and regenerating the tissues.
The vasodilatation, through the exposure to high temperatures followed by a cold shower, stimulates the blood vessels, as well as lowering blood pressure and increasing the heart rate.
The cold showers generate the restriction of the vessels after having been dilated, generating the so-called "thermal rebalancing", a healthy routine for your heart and the entire artery system.

In the Turkish Bath, with temperatures up to 45°, you should stay for 10/15 minutes during which your body will produce a good amount of sweat.

A session of Turkish Baths produce, among others, the following beneficial effects:

  • It decongests the mucosa: the humid heat and the eucalyptus essences help melt and expel the mucus;
  • It purifies and cleanses the skin: the strong and extended perspiration promotes the expulsion of toxins;
  • It stimulates relaxation.

At the SPA Ulysse wellness centre, the Turkish Bath (that can accommodate up to 10 people) has a 20kw boiler that, by continuously producing steam, keeps the cabin constantly at 45° with humidity levels between 90% and 100%.

For those who wish to try the steam bath experience, but also for those who already have regular sessions, here are some useful suggestions to obtain greater benefits:

  • Before having a Steam Bath session, it would be ideal to delicately cleanse your body with olive oil soap and rinsing yourself in a warm shower: the skin pores will result cleaner and freer to expel the toxins with ease. The skin will also benefit from the softening, nourishing and antioxidant properties of the olive oil;
  • Having a Steam Bath once or twice a week is ideal to obtain the best results;
  • When you feel your temple pulsate, it is time to end your session;
  • After exiting the Steam Bath, you should immediately take a quick cold shower (the thermal rebalancing through the immediate exposure to cold won't cause any harm if brief but intense);
  • After a Steam Bath session, and generally after the Thermal Path where you have perspired a lot, you should lie down, cover yourself with a towel or bathrobe and relax for at least 20 minutes, while sipping a herbal tea to regain the lost liquids;
  • It is ideal to avoid the Turkish Bath if you suffer from cardiovascular illnesses, low or high blood pressure, asthma or kidney illnesses. In these cases, it would be best to undergo a medical examination before the treatment.
